You might be wondering what a mutation is.

A mutation is a permanent change in the DNA sequence of a gene. In your case, it's to the point where you are no longer scientifically considered to be human.

A common misunderstanding is that one's mutation is a power. This is not so. Effects from being a mutant range from having the ability to fly to possessing green skin. The race is most unpredictable, no doubt part of the reason they are so feared by humans.

While the change in appearance usually has no side affects, any kind of mutation that might be considered a power always does. Mutants with those kinds of mutations always have weaknesses and counter mutations. It's as if whatever force created mutants ensured none would be able to overcome a certain obstacle. They continue to climb the ladder to the sky in their development but never manage to get past the glass ceiling.
