Mara had already been through the populated areas looking for Sulley. She really hadn't expected him to be there but it was a shot. Her encounter with Claude von Neumann still weighed heavily on her mind and she shuddered from time to time as she ran. Not even the simple pleasure that running gave her could wipe out that guy's effect on her. Hate, that was what she felt for that feeling. It disgusted Mara that someone could affect her that easily. He probably hadn't even been trying!
Mara's breath came in angry gasps as she slowed down to check out the fields. For several moments she thought she'd have to go look elsewhere when she finally noticed someone up ahead. She walked over at a leisurely pace. After running for so long she was somewhat tired. A normal pace would suit just fine.

Sulley turned his head to the side to watch Mara approach. He lay in no specific place in the field on his back with his hands tucked under his head and one of his knees bent. A gentle sun shone from the sky, though he wondered whether or not it was real. He certainly felt warmth coming from it's direction. It hurt to look at it too.
The man appeared completely at ease. Of course the natural slant in his brow and eyes made him look menacing, but otherwise Sulley was stoic and mellow, just like usual.
As well as was the norm, he didn't bother saying a word. Nope, he just watched her.

Mara strolled over and sat down. She took a few moments to calm down and catch her breath. The occasional tremor ran through her limbs while she did this. Sulley was quiet as usual and Mara appreciated that at the moment. She was still too abuzz with emotion to say anything calmly. Once she'd calmed down she glanced over at him.
"Hello Sulley."
Well that was a somewhat lame start to the conversation. Mara steeled her courage.
"I believe I've found a strong potential member for the Rebellion. Subject to your approval of course."

Sulley's ear began to hurt, as it was being pressed against a small rock protruding from the ground. He chose to ignore the itching desire to shift his head, and instead lay motionless. Slipstream sat so close. If he wanted he could easily reach out his hand and touch her. Maybe just an affectionate nudge. Maybe a forceful shove. But Sulley didn't feel particularly friendly--enough to show appreciation--at that moment, nor was he having bouts of friskiness.
He waited a long moment before responding.
"Do you like him?" Sulley asked slowly. He wasn't sure what or how but he just knew, at least, his senses were telling him, it was a male she was referring to. Dark eyes watched her closely for any sign or hint she might give away as she responded.

Mara considered the question for a moment. Her answer came nearly immediately.
"No. I don't like him. He frightens me and I think he's quite a liar. But he's strong. He says his power is reality bending but I don't really believe that. Whatever his power is it can produce a wide variety of effects as well as a fair bit of damage.'
'Not only that but he seems at least fairly intelligent and can be very charming when he wants to be. He'd be a strong asset I think. However I wouldn't count on him. Trust him as far as you could throw a ten thousand pound weight."
Mara laid down in the grass and stared at the fake sky above. Even if it was false the sense of normality it provided was much appreciated.
"I told him I'd come speak to you and see if you wanted to meet him. If you don't it's no big deal. If you do then pick the place and I'll go fetch him."

Sulley's brow came down hard at Mara's response. Both in thought and the tiniest sliver of anger. She was a pretty confidant woman, he wasn't sure if there was a lot that could scare her. Then again he didn't know her all too well so he could be mistaken. Power was good, yes, but unruly power could be fatal. Sulley was always hesitant when coming up against something that wasn't physical. That applied to both powers and emotions. He didn't feel as in control when confronted with either. Lack of control made him change.
"So what's the real reason you're telling me about him? You don't like him, you don't trust him, he's no big deal. But you're telling me about him." Sulley turned over on his side so his ear would stop hurting and to open up to Mara. He propped his cheek with a hand whose elbow was planted into the ground.
"I don't understand you." Or women, for that matter.

That makes two of us Sulley. I don't understand you either.
Mara contained that thought. There was no point in saying it. Instead she concentrated on his question. Why had she mentioned Claude?
"Because I told him I'd ask you about him. And because I think he could be extremely useful. He wouldn't be an easy enemy if anyone else got a hold of him. Better to have him on our side at least somewhat."
Mara glanced to her side to look over at Sulley. The man confounded her no end. As much as she looked forward to these meetings with him she generally ended up walking away confused and angry.

Sulley grunted, indicating he'd heard her and also a thought that was either negative or sarcastic, either way wisely unspoken. From what he'd heard, he didn't like the man already. It could have been because he didn't like the thought of Mara and him speaking to one another. She's labeled him dangerous. Then again Sulley did have these wonderful and magical senses that usually had accurate estimates and predictions. Everyone in Freakopolis was dangerous, but you tended to get even more wary than the usual when one dangerous person called another person dangerous. Mutant, that is.
"You..." thought all that by yourself?--thankfully Sulley changed what he'd planned to say mid-sentence, "okay. I'll meet him. But that doesn't mean anything more than I'm giving him a chance. I don't need him. Make sure he knows that." The man's words were petulant, despite his confident tone. He had certainly convinced himself that he didn't need the guy Mara was promoting.
Sulley suddenly felt boxed. He sat up, bringing up his knees, glaring at the ground, lapsing into silence.

Mara nodded.
"I told him as much before I came but I'll let him know in no uncertain terms. Where do you want to meet him?"
Sulley's change in posture and attitude made her want to ask him what was wrong. She could tell he didn't like the idea of Claude already. Anything other than that was a mystery. Mara had predicted that he wouldn't like the man. It would only get worse when they met in person.
That blasted wall of Sulley's. No matter what she did it stayed there. She was trying! Somehow Mara knew that either this man or that Claude von Neumann would be her death. If not by physical means then by sheer mental exhaustion.

Sulley shrugged his shoulders in a rather bird-like manner and continued to exchange sharp looks with the blades of grass. He focused on his pointer finger and poked at the ground, mysteriously slicing whatever got close.
She was the one who met the man. It was her idea for him to join. Her idea Sulley to meet him. So she could be the one to choose where they met.
Sulley glanced at Mara from the corner of his eyes, not realizing how he narrowed them.

He was being difficult again. Sulley just sat there in silence, playing with the grass. When he glanced at her she couldn't be sure whether or not he was glaring at her. She sighed. Mara supposed it was up to her. She raked her brain for a fitting place to meet.
"Fine. Be at the fountain later and I'll bring him by."
Mara stood up. Since Sulley was being sullen she saw no point in sticking around. It would just get messy and confusing. She looked over at him.
"I'm going now. I'll see you later."
Her voice held a note that said she was tired. She'd started this for herself and her revenge but now it was just as much about Sulley. Mara didn't really like that but she accepted it as a fact. As she walked off her shoulders held a distinct bowed look to them that bespoke her mood.

Sulley watched Mara walk away just as he'd watched her come, except there was a distinct difference in the scent of the wind that trailed behind her. He lifted a hand to his chest, where he suddenly began to feel compressed, and had a deep sense of disappointment and failure that cascaded down his internals, washing over everything inside of him and tainting the man he was. His teeth worked against each other and his grew lively with goose bumps. The finger against his chest cut him deeply, but that pain was dead.
To be continued at the fountain.
